One Year Studio Program

Each year, we offer ten rent-free studios which support and facilitate the professional development of artists at all stages of their careers, from emerging to established.

The One Year Studio Program provides artists with the space to work freely, test new ideas, engage with each other and connect with our national and international peer networks and audiences. As well as providing much-needed space for experimentation and the development of new work, the Program offers critical support through advocacy and curatorial dialogue that directly impact artists’ careers.

Artspace has offered one-year studio residencies entirely rent free since 2015. The 2023 redevelopment has enabled us to increase our studios from 7 to 10. This means the program will support 350 artists over the next 35 years.

Each year, 10 selected artists are given the opportunity to take part in our program for a concentrated 12-month period to support their creative development.

Each artist receives:

  • A flexible rent-free light-filled studio space of approximately 45sqm with a kitchenette and working desk

  • 24/7 studio access

  • Opportunities to participate in Artspace’s Open Studios, public programs, and outreach initiatives

  • Individual studio visits from Artspace staff for professional development throughout the year

  • Curatorial advocacy, including introductions to local and international curators through Artspace’s peer network

  • A location in the heart of Sydney, close to peer organisations including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Firstdraft, National Art School and UNSW Art & Design

  • Universal access throughout the building, including communal spaces for connecting with peers and colleagues

  • Invitations to ‘Stop-work lunches’ hosted by Artspace, with other studio artists, the Artspace team and visiting national and international peersOur studio residents are selected via an Open Call for applications each year, which are assessed by Artspace staff and Board Members, including Board artist representatives.

International and interstate artists are encouraged to apply but must be willing to relocate to Sydney for the duration of the residency, at their own expense, in order to fully participate in the program.

The Open Call will be announced by the end of August each year. Unsolicited applications outside of the Open Call period will not be considered.
