How We Hold What’s Possible: Pinaree Sanpitak in Conversation with Victor Wang

Artspace presents How We Hold What’s Possible – a conversation between acclaimed Thai artist Pinaree Sanpitak and Artspace Executive Director Victor Wang, drawing on more than four decades of Sanpitak’s practice.

The conversation marks the first movement of a three-year artistic and curatorial collaboration between Sanpitak and Artspace, unfolding across Sydney and Singapore through a series of interconnected projects, before returning to Artspace in 2028.

The discussion at Artspace considers how, across Sanpitak’s practice, bodily experience has expanded from the intimate and autobiographical into questions of space, perception, nourishment and collectivity, alongside a wider history of artistic exchange across Australia and the Asia-Pacific.

Beginning with ARX 1989 in Perth, Sanpitak’s first international exhibition, the talk reflects on key moments in her practice, including Confess and Concealed at the Art Gallery of Western Australia (1993), APT3 (1999), her experiments with materials at Northern Editions in Darwin, Anything Can Break at the 18th Biennale of Sydney (2012), and Noon-Nom at QAGOMA (2016). It also considers more recent presentations at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022), Bangkok Art Biennale (2023), Choreographies of the Everyday at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (2025), and Dream Rooms: Environments by Women Artists 1950s–Now at M+, Hong Kong (2025).

Together, these moments reveal a practice shaped by decades of artistic exchange, experimentation and connection across the Asia-Pacific.

As a larger three-part project, How We Hold What’s Possible considers how an exhibition can emerge through conversation, collaboration, hospitality and return – unfolding over time and across places.
