Overview

13 September 2014

Join Mark Feary and On Return and What Remains artists Khadim Ali, Bonita Ely and Baden Pailthorpe as they discuss their work in-situ and examine the ideas underpinning the exhibition.

On Return and What Remains brings into focus the personal tolls endured by returning soldiers, their families and loved ones, as well as those impacted by the ravages of war. The exhibition assembles a selection of insightful, harrowing and confronting works that attempt to shine light on the enormous challenges and difficulties endured by those who have served duty on the frontlines of global conflicts.

27 September 2014

John Smith (Senior Researcher, Naval Historical Society of Australia) will discuss the military history of The Gunnery building, which Artspace has occupied since 1992. During WWII the property was resumed and later acquired by the Commonwealth Government for defence purposes.

Following this presentation, a military psychologist will speak about current treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder within the context of serving military personnel returning from conflict areas.
