Overview

The Divine Comedy - Dante's famous exploration of humanity's search for meaning amongst the inexplicable and intangible written in Italy almost 700 years ago - provided the starting-point for Approach by Danish artist Eva Koch. On entering the installation audiences heard voices reciting the first 13 verses of "Paradiso" containing Dante's prayer to Apollo requesting strength to hold onto just a little part of what he has seen on his journey. They then witnessed figures reciting the same verses in sign language. Caught between these two languages telling the same story audiences were sharply confronted with the constant necessity of interpretation.
