Eungie Joo

Eungie Joo is a curator, writer and educator. She was Curator and Head of Contemporary Art at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art from 2017–2024.

She was Curator of Sharjah Biennial 12: The Past, the Present, the Possible from 2013–2015. She was Director and Curator of Education and Public Programs at the New Museum (2007–2012), where she also ran the Museum as Hub initiative. She was Commissioner of the Korean Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale, Condensation: Haegue Yang (2009). She was inaugural Director and Curator of the Gallery at REDCAT (2003–2007). She was co-founder of the participatory space Six Months: Crenshaw (2003).

Her curatorial practice relies on sustained relationships with artists through the production of new work, activating discursive and performative platforms, and exhibition making. Joo earned her PhD in Ethnic Studies from the University of California at Berkeley.

Eungie Joo's participation is possible through a collaboration between Artspace’s International Curators Program (ICP) and Mori Art Museum’s Global Art Professionals Development Project. The accompanying public program will also include participation from ten visiting curators from Japan as part of the Global Art Professionals Development Project, creating a direct platform for exchange between Australian and Japanese peers, and contributing to future opportunities and networks for artists and institutions across both contexts.
