Contemporary Projects Series

Experience an expansive new installation of handmade tejido (weaving) by Uruguay-born, Sydney-based artist Paula do Prado – presented as the third annual co-commission between the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Artspace as part of the Contemporary Projects series.

Drawing on the constellations and celestial myths of the Southern Hemisphere, do Prado creates a rich visual language shaped by her Charrúa, Iberian and West African Bantu heritage. Using new and repurposed fibres, do Prado weaves large-scale textiles to create vibrantly coloured motifs and figures derived from Indigenous cosmology, mythology and nature, underpinned by the notion of sentipensar (feel–thinking), meaning 'to use both mind and heart.'

Rooted in Indigenous philosophies associated with Abya Yala, a Guna language term for the Americas, do Prado's practice explores relationships between lands of the Southern Hemisphere, from plants and waterways to the movements of the stars.

The Contemporary Projects series partnership supports an artist or collective from Artspace's Studio Program to develop a new work for presentation at the Art Gallery, in collaboration with curators from both institutions.
