Over the past twenty years Michaela Gleave has developed a distinctive body of work in the public realm, the digital sphere and in museums and galleries in Australia and internationally. Event Horizon, the artists’ first major solo exhibition at a public institution in Australia, offers four new bodies of work, along with her performance series Universal Maintenance. The project draws on concepts from astrophysics, quantum physics and Earth sciences to explore limits of observation, scale and knowledge. In physics, an ‘event horizon’ marks a boundary beyond which information cannot return to an external observer. It is not a physical surface, nor a point where physical laws cease to operate, but a limit imposed by spacetime on observation and description. Event Horizon conceptualises epistemic limits: where measurement becomes constrained, where familiar explanatory frameworks lose traction, and where inference replaces direct observation.

Michaela Gleave’s project at Artspace focuses on the artists’ versatility and her open-ended experimentations as ways of opening up spaces, or ways of knowing, in order to respond to more-than-human intelligences, climate transformation and precarity. Event Horizon highlights her multi-disciplinary and research-based processes, foregrounding her longstanding engagement with conceptual, feminist and environmental practices. For this project she uses energy fields and physical materials such as mist, sound waves, atmospheric conditions, glitter, musical instruments, recycled timber and inflatable objects, to heighten audiences’ awareness of their own process of perception.
