Hayley Millar Baker is a Gunditjmara / Djab Wurrung / Taungurung and Anglo-Indian artist working across photography, collage, moving image and installation. Over the past decade, she has developed a distinctive lens-based practice grounded in Aboriginal understandings of relationality and deeply concerned with the ethics of looking.

Through deliberate acts of withholding and obfuscation, she resists demands for immediate recognition and fixed interpretation. Her images ask viewers to slow down and consider what exists beyond visibility. Rather than treating imagery as a neutral form of representation, Millar Baker considers the image an active encounter in which histories continue, ancestral presences endure and multiple temporalities coexist.

Since her inclusion in Primavera: Young Australian Artists at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in 2018, Millar Baker has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, including at the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. She received the 2026 Creative Australia First Nations Arts and Culture Award for Youth Achievement in the Arts.
