Artspace has long fostered the development of critical writing, from incisive, discursive commentary running parallel to Artspace Gallery projects through to major investigations of the state of contemporary art and its cultural contexts. Artspace has published an extraordinary number of exhibition catalogues along with a small number of highly significant books in the areas of art theory and cultural studies. The current publishing program has three primary strands. The first is a regular, bi-annual publication – Column – documenting Artspace Gallery projects and featuring a range of especially commissioned project-specific essays along with texts developed from presentations given within Artspace Public Program events. The second is a continuation of Artspace’s commitment to producing major books in the fields of art theory and cultural studies with a focus upon Australian writers. The third is a series of artist monographs accompanying major solo artist Gallery Projects.
