Overview

To invert is to turn upside down or inside out, to reverse in order or rearrange in structure. Topology can be defined as the branch of geometry that studies properties of figures or solid bodies, which remain invariant under all deformations. Inverted Topology aims to explore the deconstruction of the traditional curated gallery environment where artists exhibit separately from each other and where the curator is held apart from this activity. It aims to highlight and expand an active process of production through the collaboration of Justin Andrews, Matt Hinkley, Kyle Jenkins and Danny Lacy.

As all of the artists deal in aspects of geometric abstraction, the result of this collaboration is an angular fusion of overwhelming geometric intensity. Expanding plateaus of architectonic strata overlap, collapse, fold and collide mapping a quantitative space within the gallery based on the relational materiality of abstraction.

In the form of wall drawings and sculpture, the cross pollination of individual styles within the same frame, rupturing and overlapping, constructs a hybrid artwork that references abstract art, design, architecture and the urban landscape. The dynamic intertextual relationship that occurs within this hybrid state will emphasise the conceptual framework behind Inverted Topology, which aims at extending and challenging the structural and spatial boundaries within a collaborative language.

Initial stages of the Inverted Topology project, featuring the collaborative work of Matt Hinkley and Masato Takasaka have been previously exhibited at Bus Gallery, Melbourne 2002 and First Draft Gallery, Sydney 2003. In April an extended version of the Inverted Topology project was exhibited at Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne featuring the collaborative work of Justin Andrews, Anna Finlayson, Matt Hinkley, Kyle Jenkins, Danny Lacy and Masato Takasaka.
