Overview

Floatatious comprises of an installation of paintings of various dimensions, by attaching them to helium balloons. As hybrid forms the floating paintings fill the gallery, hovering around at various levels between the ground and the ceiling. These forms will provide insights that addresses an ongoing investigation into our position within the world, which is above all pictorial and sculptural. Challenging conventionality the paintings lose a passive position to become active definers of the space, temporal objects that are reliant on chance and nature in an exchange between figure and form entered via relational aesthetics.

Floatatious addresses ideas of the painting process extended by such artists as Lucio Fontana, who explored the relationships between the pictorial field and reality. Fontana’s act of slashing and stabbing the canvas broke the pictorial surface revealing a physical environment surrounding the process and questioning the very subject of the painting process.
